On 9/8/25 while conducting point protection on the Jumping Eagle Fire, a type 6 from a local was on scene. The vehicle could not be located or raised by radio. While we were protecting a structure I noticed this type 6 was no longer in the general area of the protection group. I had to pull Engine XXX off structure protection to locate the vehicle as I could hear a horn honking or a back up alarm in a chimney/ box canyon. This area had only 50 yards of walls but was steep. I had E-XXX take the high ground in the black to try and locate the noise. The area below was unburned and the fire was being pushed from north to south. We were getting pulses of flame lengths of 6 to 8 feet with the wind and receptive fuel. He was able to locate the truck but couldn't get down to it. Driver stated he needed a jump start. With the pulses I pulled another truck from structure protection Engine XXX to go in and get the vehicle or the driver. There was aprrox. 150 yards of unburned fuel between the flank, 1-2 foot flames= length, and the chimney/box canyon. We pulled Engine XXX off structure protection to suppress the area that may push into the box canyon and they were able to close the back door to anything trying to push hard into the chimney/box canyon. Engine XXX was able to go in protect the down local truck by letting the flank and backing fire come to it and putting it out in a 50 foot circle around the truck. The local truck driver was picked up by 2nd local type 6 truck. We then were able to put all resources back on structure protection and go back to operations normal. |
