The type 4 engine addressed in the safenet is an engine that carries the Division of Forestry’s logo but is loaned to the City of Elko’s Lee Engine Company for use. The engine operators at the Oil Well fire were City of Elko employees, trained and qualified in structure protection. With their training and experience, they did not feel they needed to change into structure PPE at the time though they had it in the vehicle. The Division of Forestry has spoken with the City of Elko and stressed the need for proper PPE, training, and structure protection engagement on wildland fires. The City of Elko is going to meet with all operators and make sure that expectation is clear and their policies and regulations are followed. |
